Stirring the Pot: Introduction to Community Organizing (Room 9207) The people most affected by the systems that rule our lives should be at the forefront of confronting and changing them. This highly participatory session will introduce the principles of community organizing and distinguish organizing from legal, advocacy and social service approaches to making change.
Danielle Mahones and Jackie Byers, Center for Third World Organizing (CTWO)
Notes:
Traditional definitions of 5 approaches to social change
1. Service → meeting people’s immediate material needs
2. Advocacy → speaking on behalf of someone else to effect systematic change
3. Community economic development → developing alternative resource institutions
4. Electoral → supporting politicians to act on behalf and represent us
5. Direct Action Organizing → bringing people together to fight for intellectual change
